In this tutorial i will show you How to create a horror movie poster in Photoshop, by simply selecting, painting, transforming images and adding different elements together using various tools in Photoshop.
if you follow the method i’m about to show you, whatever your concept may be you will be able to manipulate any image to create mind blowing horror movie posters using Photoshop.
Original photo of girl by Nicholas Green on Unsplash.
Import the original image of girl into Photoshop and take off the background.
first thing is to import your image into Photoshop, once you have your image imported into Photoshop rename the layer so it can be editable now go to the Tool Bar search and select the Quick Selection Tool use it to make selection around the girl or who ever your character may be, when done press ctrl + J to create a new layer with that selection.
you can download Fluid Mask 3 to properly mask a subject out of it’s current background. in my future post i will do a tutorial on how to access Refine Edge and mask out a soft edged subject from it’s background in Adobe Photoshop CC.
Bring in another background image.
when learning how to create a horror movie poster in Photoshop there is one thing you should have at the back of your mind, that is ”Darkness” yes, in most cases the background is always dark.
so look for a pretty dark background image and import it into Photoshop, drag it layer below the girl’s layer, it could be anything from forest to dark warehouse to vector background.
just as you can see in the image above, for this tutorial i use a pretty dark image of a garage with a car in it and an
entrance, i remove the gate and the car using the Polygonal Lasso Tool and later place an image of a forest below the layer to create an illusion of a forest house.
Manipulate the girl and bring in the hunter
Next is to manipulate the girl, as you can see in the image above i make a cut for the hand and side of the mouth using two special tool in Photoshop, The Polygonal Lasso Tool and The Content-Aware Fill, now to do this go to Tool Bar search and select the Polygonal Tool, with the polygonal tool selected carefully make a selection from the area you want to cut out all the way to the fingers when done select the girl layer and go to the Edit Menu>Fill and a dialogue box will pop up set Use to Content-Aware, Mode to Normal and Opacity to 100% when done click OK.
Automatically that selected area will be fill with the content under it, now use the Lasso Tool to make a selection round the cut area of the remaining part of the hand, change your Foreground Color to red and use the Brush Tool to paint on the selection.
use the Polygonal Tool to select from the mouth up to the cheek area but this time what you’re going to do is to press Delete in your keyboard now you can see the background through that area, but don’t worry we will fix that in the next step. now bring in the image of a guy or any creature you want as the hunter, take off the background and place him behind the girl.
Manipulate both character completely and add other element
First go to google and download image of dog meat, blood, sickle knife and a mask. this are the element we are going to make use of in this part, now import all element into Photoshop and position them one after the other.
1. scale and position the dog meat image right on top of the cut hand, turn off the visibility of the layer and use Lasso Tool to select round the cut area when done turn on the visibility of the dog meat layer, make sure the dog meat layer is selected and press Ctrl + J on your keyboard to move selected area to a new layer, delete the former layer now you can see some kind of flesh right on top of the cut go ahead and use the Eraser Tool to blend the edges with the existing cut, set the Brush Opacity to 40% and Flow to 50% with the dog meat layer selected carefully eraser the edges so it can blend.
2. If you download a jpeg image of blood with a white background use the Magic Wand Tool to select the white area, Rasterize the layer and press Delete to get rid of the background, now scale and place the blood on top of the cut hand, change its blend mode to Multiply to look more darker and blend with the flesh.
make a duplicate of the blood layer and place it on top of the mouth, make another duplicate scale to fit in the area we cut from the side of the mouth to the cheek but place this one under the girl layer. if you download multiple blood images place some on her body, the hunter’s body and on the floor.
3. Scale and position the mask to fit on the hunter’s head, also scale and place the sickle knife in his hand, make it look as if the hunter is holding the knife in his hand in real-time to do this zoom in very close to the knife placed across his fingers, turn off the visibility of the knife layer and use the Polygonal Tool to make a selection around the fore finger now turn on the layer visibility with the sickle knife layer selected press Delete on your keyboard now that finger pop on top of the knife.
Select the hunter layer, add a drop-shadow FX and cast it to the direction of other shadow in the scene, in this case is forward in my future blog post i will do a tutorial on how to cast shadow from a subject or object to any direction in Photoshop.
4. last thing we need to do here is to get rid of the eye glasses the girl had on so we can actually make some damage to the eyes to do this go to the Tool Bar, select the Lasso Tool and use it to make a selection around the glasses make sure the girl layer is selected and go to Edit>Fill a dialogue box will appear, set Use to Content-Aware and click OK.
you will notice the eye as being damage, if you’re not satisfied with the result and want to do more damage use the Lasso Tool to select the eye, go to the Tool Bar locate and select the Patch Tool use it to fill in the bloody cut by just clicking and dragging towards that area.
Color Grade and add some text
All is set next step is to make the images in the poster more darker, less vibrance and less saturated. to do this go to the Adjustment panel right above the layer panel select Vibrance an adjustment layer will be created automatically, now bring down the vibrance and the saturation till you get almost close to black & white.
Place a Curve Adjustment layer to get a darker image. check out my previous tutorial how to turn a daytime photo into night to learn how to darken your image using curves.
If you are making a real movie poster add the require text to match your design, in the case of this tutorial i titled it ”NO ONE CAN HEAR YOU” i used the Bleeding Cowboys font so it can match my design.
Here’s my final result.
